Hawaiian & Hawaiian Guitar Records, 1891-1960 (CD-ROM)

Malcolm Rockwell

Rockwell's discography is the first serious attempt at compiling an all-inclusive listing of Hawaiian recordings. The main discography was created as an Adobe .pdf file, so it may be easily searched by keyword or character string. (Adobe Acrobat Reader is a free program available on the Internet.) The discography may be printed out from the disc, but it runs to over 1,400 pages! The entire work contains more than 12,000 entries representing 3,500 artists and 380 labels; any Hawaiian (or Hawaiian steel guitar) record known to have been issued anywhere in the world is included. The extensive Japanese listings are especially noteworthy. All pertinent data including recording dates, locations, personnel, alternate takes, etc. are included. Appendices include the complete holdings of the Helen Roberts cylinder collection at the Bishop Museum in Hawaii, the steel guitar holdings of the Arhoolie Foundation and a British piano-accordion band discography!
